Zalgiris Kaunas still has never lost an ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT game in its home Zalgiris Arena after breezing past Bayern Munich 99-64 to improve to 2-0 in Group A in the qualifying tournament in Kaunas. Zalgiris, who won the 2003 and 2007 ANGT titles, set up a showdown with undefeated INSEP Paris for a spot in Sunday’s final thanks to 26 points and nine rebounds from Martynas Echodas. Martynas Varnas poured in 20 points for the winners while Laurynas Beliauskas chipped in 16 points, five rebounds, nine assists and three steals and Laurynas Birutis had 14 points and nine rebounds. Zalgiris was the undefeated winner of the ANGT qualifying stops in Kaunas in 2012 and 2014. Bayern Munich dropped to 0-2 in the group despite Karim Jallow and Luka Burkardt both scoring 12 points and Benjamin Ivancic adding 11 points. Bayern star Richard Freudenberg was held to six points though he did collect five rebounds, two steals and four blocks.

Jallow opened the scoring for Bayern with Birutis hitting Zalgiris’ first basket at the other end. Varnas followed with a three-pointer for a 5-2 lead and Echodas threw down a dunk to make it 7-4. Freudenberg came back with a layup and Jallow grabbed a steal and layup to put Bayern ahead 7-8. Beliauskas answered though with a three-ball and Echodas came up with another dunk for a 12-8 lead. Jannik Jebens hit two baskets to keep Bayern close at 14-12 but Beliauskas started a 6-0 run for a 20-12 cushion. Burkardt responded with a three-ball only to see Justas Klimavicius punch right back with a long-ball for a 23-15 advantage. And the lead was still 25-19 after 10 minutes. After Alexander Hermann and Burkardt both split two free throws to trim the deficit to 25-21, Echodas got a baseline jumper to fall. Jallow raced down for a layup off the glass and Freudenberg followed with a fall-away jumper to bring Bayern to with 27-25. But Echodas was there to answer with a dunk and followed Burkardt’s jumper with a jumper of his own for a 31-27 lead. Ivancic’s jumper got Bayern to within 31-29 but Beliauskas and Mykolas Dieninis knocked down three-pointers for a 37-31 Zalgiris lead. Bayern would not go away with Ivancic hitting another jumper and Jebens putting back an offensive rebound to cut the margin to 39-37. Varnas and Birutis closed the first half with two free throws each and a 43-37 Zalgiris lead at intermission.

Zalgiris did not waste any time coming out of the break with Varnas hitting a three-pointer to start the second half. Jallow scored Bayern’s first basket of the third quarter to make it 46-39, but Varnas and Echodas combined for all 16 points in a 16-2 run to open a 62-41 lead. Ivancic stopped the run with a three-point play and it was 64-46 after another Ivancic score. Zalgiris responded with the next nine points, including five by Beliauskas for a 73-46 lead and the margin was 75-48 after 30 minutes. Zalgiris brought on its reserves in the fourth and did not allow Bayern to threaten the game. After Mykolas Dieninis opened the scoring for Kaunas, Alexandre Fanchini and Jallow scored to make it 77-52 and Burkardt’s score trimmed it to 79-54. But Gytis Masiulis knocked down a triple and Birutis scored two baskets as Zalgiris pushed the margin out to 88-54. Two more Fanchini baskets got the gap down to 90-60 before the home side scored the next seven points to make it 97-60 with two minutes to play.
