Gran Canaria wins ANGT Valencia to reach ANGT Finals!

U18 Herbalife Gran Canaria booked its ticket to the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Finals for the second time by defeating U18 Unicaja Malaga 72-88 in the first-place game of the ANGT Valencia Qualifier on Sunday. Jean Montero tallied 30 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists as Gran Canaria advanced to the ANGT Finals at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four in Cologne, Germany in May. Khalifa Diop chipped in 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks and Ruben Lopez had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Gran Canaria's only previous trip to the finals came in 2009, after going undefeated in the ANGT qualifier in Rome. Unicaja lost despite Javier Rodriguez picking up 17 points and Yannick Nzosa adding 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Unicaja has played in the ANGT Finals three times: 2009, 2010 and 2015. The all-tournament team included Montero and Lopez from Gran Canaria, Nzosa from Unicaja as well as Pau Tendero from U18 FC Barcelona and Alonso Faure from U18 Valencia Basket. Montero was named the tournament's MVP.

Host side Valencia finished the ANGT Valencia in third place after picking up a 98-72 victory over 2016 continental champion Barcelona. Faure collected 27 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. U18 LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne collected fifth place by knocking off U18 Olympiacos Piraeus 76-87. Daryl Doualla paced ASVEL with 21 points while Matthew Strazel had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. U18 Cibona Zagreb finished the tournament in seventh place after picking up a 78-63 victory over ANGT debutant U18 Tofas Bursa. Roko Prkacin tallied 22 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocks and Filip Paponja had 20 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals.
